Motor Development Videos - Spring 2012

Well the rite of passage for the Rockstar PE world is upon us and PED 201 has a couple of great additions so far to the Motor Development infant chapters. In the many years I've been doing this, we've seen musical styles such as classic rock, hip-hop, rap, blues, country, and tecno - but whatever style you choose, it's about communicating a clear and passionate message. We are preparing for our live presentations next week so make sure you know your lyrics and have your choreography down pat.

From Elementary to High School

After completing my final weeks at the elementary school, I made my way over to my assigned high school, where I have been for the past 2 weeks. The difference is like day and night between the students, and how you must go about teaching them. While one of the larger difficulties in elementary was managing their excitement, the biggest difficulty in the high school is trying to get them excited enough. Trying to get students motivated to move is a concept I must work on daily with these students. One small trick that I have learned works, is don't underestimate the power of stickers. It is no surprise they are a great treat for younger children, but they work surprisingly well for high school students as well. Using stickers as a positive reinforcement for good skill demonstrations, or positive affective behaviors has allowed me to motivate a number of my high school students. I will keep you updated, as the semester progresses.

PE Advocacy - Get Parents Involved!

Parents are a key group for you to engage as you promote your physical education program. It is important that parents understand the issues that surround childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles, but also that your PE program plays a role in combatting these issues.
Check out this PE4Life article on strategies to involve parents in the process of educating and inspiring a healthier lifestyle.

ExerGame Workshop at AAHPERD 2012 Rocked

We had a great morning with all the presenters and attendees discovering the many faces of exergaming and ways to implement them into any curriculum to accomplish your intended learning outcomes (specific learning outcomes/ objectives) which should be the main focus of any lesson/unit plan.

From no or little technology or to full blown exergaming systems, our star-studded cast of presenters helped attendees to feel the difference when some form of technology is used appropriately.

A special thank you to the teacher-candidates and student-teachers from SUNY Cortland who came a day earlier than the rest of the gang to help lead games, give suggestions for using technology, and be so supportive of all the presenters. They're already talking about making North Carolina in 2013 even better!

Helping out this morning were student-teachers Ben Paquette & Andy Snide; and teacher-candidates Anthony DiRienzo, Sunnie Biffarella, TJ Toteno, Steve Miner, Pat Kaplan, & Dave Sommer. One of the greatest benefits was interacting with attendees who are teachers and athletic-directors from Missouri, Mass, NY, Guam, Puerto Rico, Washington, Kentucky, Canada, .....basically all over the world. And if you ask some of them, some of them were even discussing JOB OPPORTUNITIES for next fall all over the country. You never know who you're going to meet when you're networking at these conferences...but you'll never experience it until you get yourself to a conference. Hint Hint!
