Oscar The Grouch Appeared and loved Lab 4 (201)

This week we saw some great adaptations and adjustments to pre-planned games as well as on the fly. Be sure to come with even more games and ideas to use with the students. Remember they have 4 closets full of equipment, so as soon as you get there, go through the closets to see if anything else will grab your attention. Be open to ideas and tips I give you as you're leading your games, as I think know most of you are ready for some more practical teaching strategies and refinements to what we started. Remember above all, that it is your job to provide a SAFE and POSITIVE learning environment. You need to clearly give a signal of attention, define boundaries, demonstrate the activity you want them to do, and provide developmentally appropriate tasks for the needs and abilities of your students.  Oscar was a HUGE hit and I encourage you to bring more visual aids and props to generate that buzz that you witnessed.

A Pac(ked) Nutrition Infographic

@JoeyFeith from http://www.thephysicaleducator.com posted this great Nutrition Poster using classic Pac Man characters and I think its such a smart way to present content in a visually appealing format (well at least for us older folk who grew up playing classic arcade and video games).   Keep up all the great work you're doing Joey & Crew! Structure in Chaos: Reflection

If you're reading this you're probably wondering why I have a picture of batman to the left... In the movie The Dark Knight batman tries to bring order and structure to a city that is just in chaos. That's how my partner and I felt today after teaching our lesson for our EDU 355 observation. I'm writing this as a reflection of my lesson but also as something fellow physical education majors can look to as they progress their way through the program.

Motor Development Videos - Spring 2012

Well the rite of passage for the Rockstar PE world is upon us and PED 201 has a couple of great additions so far to the Motor Development infant chapters. In the many years I've been doing this, we've seen musical styles such as classic rock, hip-hop, rap, blues, country, and tecno - but whatever style you choose, it's about communicating a clear and passionate message. We are preparing for our live presentations next week so make sure you know your lyrics and have your choreography down pat.

From Elementary to High School

After completing my final weeks at the elementary school, I made my way over to my assigned high school, where I have been for the past 2 weeks. The difference is like day and night between the students, and how you must go about teaching them. While one of the larger difficulties in elementary was managing their excitement, the biggest difficulty in the high school is trying to get them excited enough. Trying to get students motivated to move is a concept I must work on daily with these students. One small trick that I have learned works, is don't underestimate the power of stickers. It is no surprise they are a great treat for younger children, but they work surprisingly well for high school students as well. Using stickers as a positive reinforcement for good skill demonstrations, or positive affective behaviors has allowed me to motivate a number of my high school students. I will keep you updated, as the semester progresses.

PE Advocacy - Get Parents Involved!

Parents are a key group for you to engage as you promote your physical education program. It is important that parents understand the issues that surround childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles, but also that your PE program plays a role in combatting these issues.
Check out this PE4Life article on strategies to involve parents in the process of educating and inspiring a healthier lifestyle.
