Rockstar PE Teachers in the Making

Have you ever been Punk'd in a class? Well that's how we start our Basics of Effective Instruction in PE (EDU 255) because in order to best help you, we have to first see what you can accomplish right now.  It is a pre-assessment of your current teaching skills and knowledge and we will refer to these videos as starting points and for analyses of effective teaching strategies.  If you haven't already seen your video, they can be found on our YouTube Channel.

Today we will show you how to grab the EMBED code so that you can display your videos on your blog or website so that others can easily see it.

I wanted to share with you a video of an interview I did for Good Morning America Health in NYC just over a month ago. Besides teaching, my main focus is on using technology to improve health-related behaviors and attitudes and the primary way I do that is by using exergames as a stimulus for physical activity.

ASSIGNMENT
Please leave a comment here on what your reaction and thoughts are to using games for exercise, therapy or as a gateway towards other physical activities. If you don't agree with me, then please tell me why.

I am looking forward to working with all of you and getting to know you better so that we can really make an impact on children's attitudes, behaviors, and knowledge towards health and fitness.

"Guiding and inspiring youngsters in the process of becoming physically educated and healthy for a lifetime."

First off, I feel like everybody plays video games! Wether it's on XBOX, Wii, or PS3 or even the computer I feel we all have played video games or do play video games on a regular occasion. With the increasing number of children staying inside to play these video games and the obesity rate going up and up I feel combining physical activity and games for exercise is a great idea! The game part grabs the child or person(s) attention and they exercise while they play. It's like getting a child to take vitamins by putting them in apple sauce or putting them in a sandwich. It's a great to get the heart rate going and get the mind to work at the same time. Although the thoughts and ideas behind games providing exercise is still fairly new, it's something that a lot of gyms and rec. buildings are start to use in their facilities. A lot of gyms have rooms and sessions where the Wii is used to get the blood flowing. The Wii changed the gaming market with it's ability to incorporate the idea of exercise and gaming and since it's release now XBOX and SONY have come out with ideas to compete that also use the idea of exercise and movement with gaming. I think these steps are just the stepping stones to what will come in the future for gaming for exercise. With programs like WiiFit people can do workouts regularly and monitor things like BMI. I feel more and more people are wanting to be fit and be more healthy but maybe can't afford the monthly gym membership and don't want have people looking at them at the gym so they'll use gaming as a form of exercise. I love my Wii and I use it all the time for boxing and basketball and tennis etc. All in all I think gaming for exercise is a excellent way to get the body moving, I think it's a great way to get people active both young and old and it should be something that all P.E. teachers and future P.E. teachers should look into!

Using video games as a way of exercise or therapy is an excellent way to get people off the couch and start moving around. With the increase of game systems on the market today, I feel that kids are spending most of their time sitting inside, especially during their Summer vacation. Working for a Summer Recreation Department for the past 6 years, I have noticed that less and less kids are participating. I always hear the kids talking about "Halo" and "Call of Duty," and how they stay up until late hours of the night. If we can take that mentality and apply the exercise and movement to their video game play, it could be used as a gateway to a life of fitness and health. As you said in the interview, video games bring people together. These games can be used to get others to work out together. Working out with someone such as a friend can make it more enjoyable, and also gives you some sort of motivation to work out as well. For kids to exercise and older people to use games for therapy, it can make it easier for them to focus on something. The custom games are made for certain people with certain disabilities and can help them to improve their motor skills. In closing, for today's generation, video games are a great way to keep people motivated, focused, and healthy. It is a great way to keep up with the technology.

I definitely feel that games for rehab and exercise is a great way for people to become more active. Today, many people cannot stand the thought of walking into a gym or going outside for a run or just being active on a daily basis. Being active is especially important for children who unfortunately for the most part are not active today. Children these days play inside. Video games, computer games and television are what the children want. If there was a way to mix exercise in with the television and video games why not take advantage? These games that involve movement and exercise are fun and healthy for everyone not just children. It will get people moving and active. Even people who are disabled can still engage in many of these games. People who play these games will not only become healthier but will enjoy becoming healthy as well.

I think that using games as a method of therapy or physical activity as long as the right games are being played. The Wii console system has seemed to bring out a lot of conversation on this idea because all of the games are played while usually standing and moving around. Children these days are introduced to the gaming world at a very young age now and it sticks with them. So instead of seeing gaming as a horrible thing like it is usually seen as, it can be turned into an advantage that this activity is introduced at such a young age. Whether some people know it or not, games such as dance dance revolution isn't only an absolute blast playing but it helps with many things such as agility, foot-eye coordination, and endurance. I think these games will progress in production as the obesity problems are high and this could be used as a partial solution.

I believe using these games are a great way to get people to exercise. It's great for kids, because not only do they get to play video games and become active, these games allow them to get in a good amount of healthy competition. Whether you're competing against friends or yourself, competition is a great motivator to get ones self to do better. And this can be applied to kids and adults.
When talking about adults specifically, using technology to work out can be exciting and that can help motivate activity. I for one just got a pedometer, and think its the coolest thing becuase it can tell me all these facts. Games like the wii fit have similar capabilities, which can make the owner more excited to use it. I believe these new video games are a great new way to get both adults and children to engage in an active lifestyle.

Video games tend to receive negative views from parents and adults. They are viewed as things that "rot your brain" and as unhealthy. That all changed when Nintendo came out with the Wii. The Wii revolutionized active gaming, incorporating fitness with video games, and changed the ways video games are looked at. Who would have thought that video games could be healthy for you? I never thought it was possible and was amazed and in awe at the brilliance and intrigue of it. Now adults and kids alike are playing video games more than ever.

If you have ever played the Nintendo Wii you know how much of a workout it can be. There is even an injury named after the Wii called "Wii-itis", which is similar to tennis elbow. From tennis and golf to jogging, active gaming is a great way to exercise in your home. Now kids are actually having fun while exercising.

Kids aren't the only people that are benefiting from active gaming. The Nintendo Wii is also being used for physical therapy and weightloss. There is a balance board that goes with the Wii that can be used for balancing in physical therapy, and there is an entire game called Wii Fit that promotes exercise. As mentioned in the Good Morning America Health video it has been used for Parkinson's disease, which is great.

I think that incorporating video games with exercise is a great way for children and adults to stay healthy and get in the necessary exercise in a time where inactivity and obesity is so high.

Ive been seeing commercials for this new just dance game on tv and it looks super fun. Games like this is a fun way to get physically active. The Wii has made this games very popular with wii fit and certain sports games that make you perform tiring arm motions to move. I think video games that incorporate physicals is a great idea and i personally have alot of fun doing them. Children these days are spending more and more time inside playing video games. Now that these video games incorporate physical movement into it. Sometimes going to the gym can get repetive and boring but this is a new way to keep exercising exciting. I definitely recommend it!!!

I agree that video games for rehabilitation as well as just exercise is great direction for our country to be moving in. Children everywhere are addicted to video games which give them the opportunity to Derek Jeter, or Eli Manning. With the incorporation of exergames children can be active and work out, while having fun. As far as rehabilitation I think the interactive games can help people tremendously. Most people when they have rehabilitation hate doing the same exercises over and over each day or week. With the exergames we can mask their rehabilitation with something more fun that will hopefully make them want to continue when they are home or done with their treatment sessions. The incorporation of video games into fitness and rehabilitation has endless possibilities, that need to continue to be explored.

I think that the use of video games in exercise is a great way to get lazy people to live healthier lifestyles. They can sit at home and not leave the living room and still get a good work out. Although this is all good, i still do believe we shouldn't put such a high emphasis on the video game exercising. Call me old school but i still think physical activity should be done out doors or in the gym. This will help many people though because se jut wont leave there house to do physical activity. I think this is a great idea but if you can get outside and and be active!

People of all ages from all over play video games. The sad part is before Wii came out kids would sit and stare at a TV for hours. They would usually be eating unhealthy junk food while they were sitting there, this was one reason for obese children. With Wii now around I think its a great way to play video games, not only is it bringing physical activity into their everyday lives it is also bringing families together. I thought it was amazing to find out that it can also help rehabilitate patients that need the extra care to the specific areas of their body. I believe that Wii is a great way to get everyone involved in a different way of exercise that everyone has enjoyed for years. The way that something like this can be used in Phys Ed classes, classrooms, hospitals, and other community events is such a incredible thing. I thought it was interesting how this can be used on Parkinsons disease, a family friend has this disease and its hard to watch him suffer and shut down, but this has helped me learn and understand that there are ways to help what could happen in the future to some patients with certian diseases such as Parkinsons. There are nothing but positives that come out of using the Wii for both social enjoyment and exercise!!

Personally, I think using exercise games such as wii fitness and other electronics are a key factor in getting in touch with kids and or adults that are not necessarily fit these days. Today many kids grow up playing games, rather than playing outside and climbing tree’s. These games that you play on wii and other devices allow you to use your body to control the game, at the same time allowing you to be physically active. These exercise games are on an up rise because we are now getting on the younger generations page, and involving physical activity with gaming.
Games such as dance, dance revolution for the wii is a great source to get kids moving. It allows for social interactions if played with friends, and also moves your body in ways that provide physical activity that you won’t get by just pressing X, square, O, and or triangle. Exercising gaming personally is a great start for kids at a younger age to start being more active. With obesity levels on a rise, exercising gaming can lead to better physically active for young adults and or adults, and maybe have an influence on them becoming active outside of gaming.

I think it depends on the game, like Wii or DDR then yes because you are actually getting up and doing something (physical activity) rather than just sitting down and playing with a controller, because there is no physical activity involved. But I mean once in a while video games are good to get your mind off things and just to have fun same go for boardgames, great way to interact with friends and families etc. Having fun I think is really important. I believe when playing games like the wii and/or DDR its all about having fun and sometimes what people dont realize is they are actually exercising and becoming physically fit.

I feel that some video games are helpful in getting people active and pushing them in the step towards an active lifestyle. i know from first hand experience that the wii fit is a great way to get the blood flowing and helping someone exercise. some of the games that the wii fit offers are challenging and somewhat difficult. i feel that games that get you up and moving or just up off the couch are positively influencing activity. However games that only require the use of a hand controller and dont require any movement off the couch are not good. I have never really been a big proponent in the use of video games however games like the wii fit i feel are possitive way for beginners who want to change their life for the better and even people who just want to get up and get moving

Playing video games as a form of exercise/ workout is probably the best thing ever. Not everyone agrees but how can't u? Me personally i hate to workout, but if playing a video game like guitar hero or just dance helps me stay fit then sure im all for it. at the same time you will not look at it as working out but more as having fun. i found out today that playing video games that involve movement actually help with certain illnesses. i think some confuse the term video games as the one's where all you are doing is sitting down. the wii system is probably the best game system out now. not only for fun but also for physical health.

I strongly believe that using video games as a way of exercise and or therapy is a great idea. Each year new systems come out and they are a must to many. I believe these video games pertain to children a lot more. Children are in school all day and for the most part remain unactive during that time period. Providing a game or system that can give the children some form of exercise while also keeping their attention is key. However, these games that provide exercise and movement can be for people of all ages, sizes and groups. The game Just Dance provides the participant with a fun way to exercise to the music he/she likes. Participants who play these systems will not only become healthier but have fun along the way.

I believe that video games for rehab and therapy is a great way for people to get active. I think this is a big step for those who can not physically get up and go to the gym or go for a walk or run. Certain people with diseases, those with autism, and even victims who had to suffer a stroke can now get to be active in the comfort of there own homes. Video games, television, and the computer has taken over our youths lives. I think its very important that as a nation we change with the times. This is the solution. If children want to play video games all day long, why not make video games that can get them moving and exercising? I think its such a great idea. I actually just got Wii fitness this past summer. I fell in love with this game. I try to go to the gym 4 or 5 days a week, and this game got me to be active on the days i decided not to go. This game got my heart beating fast and my body to work up a sweat, it was not easy! America has a huge obesity problem right now, and i believe that this new way of exercising with video games can cut down those numbers if used to its full advantage.

I think the Wii is a great gaming system. I never played video games as a kid and missed out on the original idea of the "video game". I like that I got interested in modern video games that involve movement and fitness. The Wii is by far one of the most fun activities I've done. My family got it for Christmas two years ago and watching my Grandma use the Wii fit board was hilarious. I think this kind of video game not only involves physical activity, but brings people together socially. This is a great activity for people who are apprehensive to exercise. It almost tricks them into being active while having fun. I believe that using this type of therapy would be very beneficial for senior citizens. It is non abrasive and fun, works on balance and coordination, and once again makes physical activity enjoyable and social.

I feel that video games for exercise and a gate way for other physical activities has pros and cons. The pros to using video games for exercise is that video games is something the majority of students do on a regular basis. Its a different connection for students and therapy patients to physical activity, especially those who aren't into sports. The Cons to using video games is that many facility, like schools are on tight budgets and video gaming systems are expensive. Also I feel that video games take away from class interaction because students are glued to the video game and not with their classmates. I feel like it would lead to many of them going home and playing non-physical video games because that is what most people have access to. Plus they would be stuck inside all day. As of right now I think the cons out way the pros.

I feel what Professor Yang is doing is so generation appropriate. For years now Physical education has been at a stand still because it has been more sport oriented. Having a sports oriented programs can be bad because there can be a lot of kids in one class and out of those kids, there can be a select few who actually like the sport and the ones who don't kind of shadow the real athletes in the class and don't want to exert any energy. With using the Nintendo Wii, it is so beneficial to kids now days because the majority of kids that have the resources play video games everyday. And what do they play it for? a reward, maybe moving up a level, earning points, or beating the game. Now if you put exercise into this equation it helps so much because they don't even know that they're actually working out. and if they are wouldn't care because they want to excel in the game. And no this does not stop at children this can range to all age levels and various disabilities.PE, get ready for a makeover!

I think that using video games as a way to get people active and using them in therapy is a great idea. A large amount of the population do enjoy playing video games and this is a way to allow them to do things they have fun doing (playing games)plus allows them to be active at the same time. I feel a lot of people feel like going to the gym or going outside to workout can sometimes be a pain. This seems to keep them from working out, and they sometimes think working out is not enjoyable. By having them play a game which gets them up and moving it takes their mind off the fact that they are truly working-out. I feel that this is great and has the chance to have a positive impact on a great deal of peoples' lives. Also using it for therapy I feel it is a great idea as well. I know personally when I had to go to pt for my knee I always went in not looking forward to it. However, by introducing the element of using a game it makes the therapy fun in peoples' eyes!!!

I believe that using video games for therapy and exercise is a good within reason for this generation. A lot of the video games coming out now for the Wii involve movement and different types of exercises. I think this is a good idea for the children that do not like to participate in athletics or cannot afford gym or other memberships. Many children are addicted to video games which is why I believe that games that encourage exercise and movement are a gateway to getting children active. The early children start to enjoy being active the more likely they will stay active for life. If video games can show that being active can be fun then I think they can be a positive influence for children. I also think that video games can help make it easier and more fun to get involved with therapy. It can be a long and painful process but using video games can encourage people to try harder and participate fully in the rehabilitation process. Video games can encourage people to get up and move as well as introduce an active lifestyle so I believe that they can be a positive influence.

Video games is a great way to make exercising fun. Many kids these day’s choose to play video games over doing activities outside. In some way’s I feel that video game technology has contributed to the growing rate of obesity. Video Games are a great way to get people exercising who wouldn’t normally exercise. Justin makes some good points about how a lot of PE programs have a lot of sport and team oriented activities. This is a nice way to switch it up. Instead of always doing sports activities, you can set up a program that is more individual to the students. Video Games are a great way to get kids who normal wouldn’t exercise to do so. It also is a fun way to do rehab for everyone especially senior citizens. I had to do rehab for my ankle and it is really tedious and boring. If I was playing a video game while doing it, it would have been more enjoyable. I think this is a great way to make exercising more enjoyable.

I believe that using any type of technology to promote a healthy lifestyle is great. Many children are addicted to video games and this is just one of the many causes of the rising obesity rate seen in children across the country. There are many different systems that people can use that get them moving around and improving their fitness. Video games used for exercise are also a lot of fun and motivate people to work out. Going for a brisk walk or jog everyday can get boring so using different systems like the Wii Fit or exergaming can give any person a bit of physical activity while having fun at the same time. I think that all school districts that can afford to purchase video game exercise systems for their physical education programs should definitely invest in these systems.

I believe using the Wii for exercise is a great way to gain a certain level of physical fitness. The game grabs attention, get the people off of the couch and commands their focus for an extended amount of time. There is a vast majority of people in our society that do not enjoy going to the gym to complete the same old workout everyday. Wii games are a great way to make people move. That's all it takes for some people to really get into it is to get moving. Once they get past this stage, they're engrossed in the activity and they achieve a level of physical fitness for that day. By incorporating video games into an exercise regimine, they are creating a fun, healthy way of exercising that is increasing enthusiasm for health all over our nation.

I thought that Mr. Yang's appearance on Good Morning America was pretty interesting and beneficial. I don't think right now that these types of video games are being utilized, but eventually we will see kids using these games more often. I feel that kids are playing x-box and PS3way to much. I can never hear enough about "Halo" or " Call of Duty". I think the main problem is that most kids have no idea these excercise video games exist. Kids need to be educated and familiar with these games. Who is going to tell them? Parents? Teachers? I think if high school and middle school PE classes have these exercise games availible to the kids they will want to purchase the games. I think that the therapy video game is so amazing. Kids that are going through rehabilitation will be enthused becuase it would seem like a video game to them, and it is a video game! They would be playing the video games while making progress with their rehabilitation.

After having a better understanding of teaching through the physical, I can now see why technology is being stressed to all age groups for an increase in physical activity. People who have disabilities or a disadvantage in certain areas can now use these skills in a less competitive and more fun environment. It has always been thought that the majority of people who play video games usually opted not to participate in strenuous activities. Now, with the use of technology, these two different groups can share an interest that is more suiting to the common person rather than the extreme athletes. Video games can now be looked at as a fun way to exercise or recondition a recovering body part unlike the normal bicycle or treadmill they are used to at a physical therapy center. I believe the hardest part of making this successful nation-wide would be advocating it to old fashion stylists who would have a hard time believing playing video games could be healthy. Once the proof is out there, with thanks to your push in technology for physical fitness, there may be a huge movement towards technology for being physically fit.

I feel that using video games to help children become active is a great idea. This is a perfect median for children who feel as though they are not physically fit, and are afraid to go out and be sociable for fear of ridicule. This is horrible that some children feel this way. Using this video game system can allow the children to develop movement skills, and eventually make a move from the living room to the playing field. In regards to using video games as a physical therapy device is also great. I have seen shows where using virtual reality devices to treat phobias have had a great effect. This is essentially the same idea. As long as the game is designed to relate to something the patient enjoys. I can see where it would be helpful and fun and not seem like work. This I would feel as being key in a rehabilitation environment, relating the rehabilitating act to something they enjoy. This will allow them to see it as fun and want to do the action more often.

I think it's a really interesting way for people to exercise and get the therapy they need to stengthen themselves. It makes a workout fun and different then just going for a run or hitting the gym. Also most kids who like to play video games are out of shape and making video games that help keep or get you into shape can help anyone to get into shape. Older people who use this for therapy are intrigued by the new technology and excited to try it out and see how they like it. Its just a great way to switch things up and have different methods to exercise and therapy. Good job on your interview and very interesting ideas on your games.

I think that using video games towards exercise, therapy, and any kind of physical activity is an awsome idea. DDR started it and Wii made it take off and i've heard that the PS3 is coming out with something similiar to the Wii remotes soon. Almost everybody plays video games to some degree and when they do they are sedentary. Some peoples main hobbys/lifestyles are video gaming. If you could take all of that time that they are sedentary and make them physically active that could really change alot of peoples lives. right now its just dance pads and hand held remotes but just think about where we could be 10-15 years from now with this. i was riding on one of those bikes in the gym that has you racing agains other bikers while you pedal and it was so much fun i didn't want to get off lol and that was just biking. if more competitive games are developed there could online play or tournaments at friends houses games like this.

Nicole Tucker said...

I think that using video games as a source of physical activity is a great idea. A good example would be for an elderly person going through rehab. A video game will help them focus on having fun, and not even realize that they are being physically active or working on improving skills. Small children will also like using video games for physical activity because they won't even realize that they are up and moving. Kids will love playing a game and being physically active at the same time. Also, if a child is playing the bicycle course game, and has a good time, he or she may be interested in learning how to ride a real bike, or pick up mountain biking as a hobby.

Anyone who has been through any type of physical therapy, big or small, can tell you that it isn't very entertaining. In fact, I know plenty of people, myself included, that don't do their exercises enough because there are other things we would rather be doing.

Most people have a competitive streak in them somewhere. With video games, it is easy to be competitive even if it is only against yourself.

By combining exercise and games, people are now able to exercise and have fun doing it and are thus more motivated to do so.

I think that it's great that different kinds of PE are getting introduced into the public eye. Many people always thought that PE is useless, but it has been evolving into a modern society and this is what is needed to keep kids interested. I thought it was great that Prof. Yang went on TV to show how PE is changing and the great things that technology is doing to aid PE teachers. It's also cool that games can be used to help people return from an injury. Some injuries take longer to coem back from and it is important that people are interested in getting better and actually want to get better.

Video Gaming is a great way to get people moving. I think the programs that many companies are formulating to get people active are AWESOME! I mean, what a great way to expand the number of people you can reach as a physical educator! I think this novel approach to physical education is going to be a hit - and I graciously give my total support. I believe that every child is unique and that everybody learns differently. If using games on the Wii gets people going and excited to move we should absolutely try to put some video gaming into our PE curriculum.

I also think that using these video games to treat disease and for physical therapy is a FABULOUS idea. Speaking from experience, physical therapy is usually horrendously boring and redundant and you have to pay for each visit. With the introduction of these new programs for gaming consoles that many people already own or have access to - I think we can make therapy a want to and much less expensive (seeing as you might be able to do it in your own home). In the video, I also liked how Dr. Yang demonstrated using video gaming to treat Parkinson's. It seems like a great way to actively and positively approach an otherwise, sometimes, disheartening situation.

I think video gaming physical activity and therapy is the wave to a positive and active future for a lot of people and we should do our best to advocate for it.
