High intensity exercises reduce CVD risk factors better than aerobic activities in adolescent youth (study)

Some questions for you:
  • Do you provide activities that are of high intensity or do we primarily focus on moderate levels of activity?
  • How might you take advantage of this new study and create more high intensity activities?
  • How will you deal with the fact that children do not have high cardiovascular fitness levels and then you're asking them to work extra hard?
  • Do you know how the body (especially youth) responds to movement and the bioenergetics involved in exercise?
  • Have you taken EXS 387, EXS 397 prior to student teaching?
  • Do you think it's important to have this knowledge and skill set in human movement to be a great and transformative educator?
This article examines the effects of brief, intense exercise in comparison with traditional endurance exercise on both novel and traditional markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in youth.

Watch the full episode. See more Need To Know.
In this PBS special, they focus on our best bet at showing the importance and benefits of regular physical activity within a high quality physical education program.  Naperville Central High School has blazed the way for all of us and because of the efforts of the late Phil Lawler and Paul Zientarski were ahead of their time, but never gave up on what they envisioned. What do you envision for your program and how hard are you willing to work and for how long?

Fitspott: Spotting PE teachers

Cortland Alumni David Gise (1991 - BS Adult Fitness) created Fitspott, a new social networking platform for anyone interested in health and fitness, a robust platform to meet, communicate, exchange ideas and more. Fitspott also wants to organize the very large and convoluted health and fitness industry into easy to navigate sub-communities of members with similar interests, goal, skills and needs. Currently they are in Beta testing and they will be launching mid September 2008.

Fitspott will be collaborating with me and you to see how Fitspott might be used by physical educators. This will be great opportunity for you to get in on something new from the ground up. and will be just one of many real-life practical opportunities that you'll have. Please take advantage of it and really strive to be the best, most up-to-date teacher in your school, district, state, and country. No one will ever give you anything except maybe an opportunity, what you do with it is up to you.
